HONORING THE TRANSITION FROM CHILD TO YOUNG ADULT

HONORING THE TRANSITION FROM CHILD TO YOUNG ADULT

A few years ago, I was invited by a coworker to her daughter's QuinceaƱera. It has its cultural roots in Mesoamerica and is widely celebrated today throughout the Americas. Traditionally, it is a gift from the father to his daughter on her fifteenth birthday. As I was driving over to the event, I was thinking about how important it is for a teenage girl to be honored. And to be respected by her father first, but also by her mother, her family, and other adults, can be paramount to a young girl’s future. Teenage girls are fragile. What happens to a teen girl has a lasting effect. Her relationships with men in the future will show reflections of how her relationships went with her father, brothers, and other men in her teenage life.

Boys go through changes when they become young men, and I believe they should be honored and recognized, too.

I believe that events (big or small) that bring families together to take special notice and give honor to a child transitioning to adulthood can be instrumental in giving teens courage, confidence, and assurance of a good future, with the support of adults who have gone before.

I believe that there should be mention of God and the Lord Jesus as the sovereign guide of their future, and the Bible principles as their ultimate standard for every decision.

“In Luke 2, the Bible gives us a short synopsis of Jesus’s transition. He had to go from being a child, a teen, and an adult, just like the rest of us.

“Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.  And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast” (Luke 2:41-42).

At this feast, the Hebrews celebrated the great Exodus from Egypt, and how, when the angel of death slew the firstborn of all the Egyptians, he “passed over” the children of the Israelites.

“And when they [Joseph and Mary] had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.

“And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions” (Luke 2:43-46).

Just like any teenager, Jesus found something that fascinated him and distracted his attention away from his parents. He must have thought it was much more interesting to hang out with the teachers than to stay with his parents.

“And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers” (Luke 2: 47).  Here we see that the Jewish rabbis honored him. And isn’t that just the case sometimes? The parents can’t see how amazing their kids are, but other adults see and go on and on, lavishing the kids with praise.

“And when they [the parents] saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, ‘Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.’

“And he said unto them, ‘How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?’  And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them” (Luke 2:48-50).

“And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” Here we see that Jesus, as a teenager, was generally obedient to his parents, and that’s a great teaching lesson for teenagers. The other thing is that Mary thought about what was now happening in this transitional phase in her son’s life. She was taking time to really look at her son, not just as a child, but as he was turning into an adult.

We see in the next verse that Jesus truly was becoming a man. I don’t know if, in the Bible, any formal celebrations took place surrounding the time of transition. Jewish Bar Mitzvahs started in thirteenth-century France. What we know is that the Bible says that shortly after the incident in Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old, he was honored by God and by men.

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:41-52)

Parents, if you haven’t already done it, how about considering some kind of special event, even if small, to give your transitioning child some special honor, recognition, and assurance of support for whatever he or she may desire for the future. Every teen deserves the stability of not only an adult’s love but maybe even more, their respect and honor.

WALKING BY THE SPIRIT

WALKING BY THE SPIRIT

It’s Memorial Day weekend and a lot of people have come here to Vegas for a few days of fun and relaxation. But when I woke up yesterday morning, the sky was full of clouds and some of them were ominous rain clouds. I didn’t want that for the people, and I was urged by the holy spirit to pray. Recently I’ve learned some new things about vaporizing, so I asked the Lord to split up the particles in the clouds into vapor form. Within the hour, I was out watering my sunflowers and looked up to see a sunny sky and only a small ring of clouds around the edges of our city, and it stayed that way all day!

I knew that when the Lord urged me to get rid of the clouds it would happen because I’d done it before, on a rock-climbing trip. Right when we were about to start up the mountain, it started to pour down rain. The Lord told me it was because the people were afraid of climbing. But He wanted us to get over our fears, so He told me to pray. I did, and the clouds spread out and the rain stopped. Because of this supernatural experience before, it was that much easier to believe and act on what He told me yesterday.

That’s how it works. We step out when we have the slightest spiritual urging, and the Lord supports us! We have holy spirit in us, and we learn by doing.

Sure, we may make a few mistakes, but Romans 8:1 tells us that the Lord doesn’t condemn us. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

And Galatians 5:25 tells us that if we are attempting to live in a spiritual way, then we need to step up and take a chance on the actions He inspires. The results are beautiful. “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

The more we practice responding to the Holy Spirit’s voice, vibrations, urges, and nudges, the better we get at it. Philippians 2:13 says: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” And His good pleasure is to bless us and see His goodness spread throughout the earth.

“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart” (Psa. 37:4).

It was a blessing to be a partner with the Lord on giving the Las Vegas visitors a sunny day, when the devil wanted to make it gloomy. We are always winners with the Lord. Let’s see what beautiful things happen this week as we obey the Lord’s urges and walk by the spirit.

WHO PROTECTS A SCRAPPER?

WHO PROTECTS A SCRAPPER?

By the age of four, I was a scrapper. Some called it selfish, but for me, it was self-preservation. At four years old, I had a two-year-old brother and a one-year-old sister. I could see this wasn’t working out for me, so I wrapped all my favorite stuffed animals and toys, as well as my clothes, in a blue blanket and headed out the door and down the driveway. I didn’t get very far before mom coaxed me back, announcing that my favorite TV show was about to start.

My first day in kindergarten, I bit a girl on the arm when she cut in front of me to get on the swing. The teacher called my parents.

I learned early on that dad was busy working late, mom had to take care of my younger siblings, and I had to fight for myself. When some older neighborhood kids tied me up and locked me in their garage with a hose underneath the door so they could torment me with threats from outside, there was no one to come to the rescue. I screamed in terror at the top of my lungs until the older kids let me out. I’m not sure if my parents ever even knew about that.

In sixth grade, when the boys made fun of me, I wrestled Lex Garcia to the ground, pinning him down so he couldn’t get up till the teacher made me get off him.

Being a scrapper, I grew up fighting for myself. Then, when I became a Christian, I fought for my friends and the people I loved. I still do, just different weapons.

I don’t blame anyone in my family for not making me feel protected. Those early years jaded my thinking, and I was pretty good at hiding my feelings. I grew a hard shell and a tough persona. I didn’t have the feeling or experience of a father who fought for me, or a big brother either. They probably didn’t know I was in so much trouble, or they felt I was tough enough on my own. I always felt I was on my own. And even with God, I knew He would eventually bring justice to pass, but not quickly. Until now.

There was an incident at work where I was being accused of something I didn’t do, and the rumors were being spread. Suddenly, the hair on my arms stood up, and the hackles of my mind rose up, ready to fight.  Isaiah 51:20 describes it perfectly: “Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of fury.” That was me.

I felt like I was right back in that garage, little Carolyn, tied up, terrified, and enraged. I did my best to hold my tongue, but some descriptive words did slip out! But this time was different. My Father God and my big brother Jesus brought swift judgment on those who would bully me and bring me down. Those who accused me were exposed and taken down.

In all my life, I’ve never seen it happen so fast! I was shocked, and I’ll never again doubt that God has my back. He has your back, too. He is a great, great father!

If you have a father in the natural who you know has got your back, you are a very blessed person. And if you are a father, try to be this person for your kids.

If you’ve never felt the protection of a father or big brother in your natural life, then I am praying that if you ever have a demoralizing situation like I had, you will also experience the protection, love, care, and avenging, like I did. God’s fatherly actions and Jesus’ brotherly interceding are unmistakable and life-changing.

MOM TO THE RESCUE

MOM TO THE RESCUE

The grass on the hillside behind our house was long and dry—perfect for hours of fun for the three of us kids. We found the largest cardboard boxes we could and broke them down to make sleds. Up we climbed to the top of the hill and down we flew to the bottom. We’d do it again and again all day long, until mom called us for dinner. But the one time when I was sledding alone, something horrible happened.

I got tired early, so I folded my cardboard and headed home. I carefully lifted up a section of barbed wire at the bottom of the hill and started to climb under. My foot crunched down on a small dead branch in the way. All of a sudden, I was swarmed and being stung by yellow jackets. They were all over me—my face, my arms, my head, even stinging me through my socks—and they just kept attacking. Yellow jackets aren’t like regular bees that die once they sting you. Yellow jackets can just keep on stinging over and over. I must have disturbed their nest, and they were mad. I managed to get myself out from under the barbed wire and ran to the middle of the street.

They followed me and surrounded me and kept stinging me. I could do nothing to stop them. I panicked and froze there right in the middle of the street and started screaming at the top of my lungs.

My mom came running out of the house and saw immediately what was going on. She ran out to the middle of the street, where I was paralyzed in panic. Grabbing me in her arms, she quickly got me off the street and into our driveway. She turned the water on and hosed me down. I was sopping wet when she took me into the house, sat me down at the kitchen table, and slathered me from head to toe in calamine lotion, finally easing the pain of probably over a hundred yellow jacket stings.

This memory reminds me of the Bible story about the man from the Gadarenes. He was being attacked by a legion of devil spirits. Most sources say a legion can be as many as 6000 in number. The man was lashing out, tearing at himself and scaring everyone, that is, except Jesus. The man wasn’t in his right mind but Jesus had compassion on him and rescued the man. Jesus set him free from the attacks, and the people “found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind” (Luke 8:34).

My mom was not afraid. When it came to one of her kids, she had no fear, but instantly knew what to do and did it. My mom ran right into the swarm of yellow jackets, to save her daughter. She rescued me from the yellow jackets and calmed the stings.

Jesus was not afraid either. He knew that God wanted him to rescue this man and He did it. Jesus ministered God’s love to the man and delivered him from the stings of torment the devils put on him.

As I look at the people God puts in my path, I want to be more compassionate toward His children, like my mom was for me. I want to react more like Jesus and help those who want deliverance from the stings they experience in this life.

Like it says in 1 Peter 3:8: “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble” (1 Peter 3:8). First Corinthians 13:8 says: “Love never fails.”

To all of you mothers who have rescued us so many times: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT THE BIBLE?

WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THE BIBLE?

I had the opportunity to talk to a friend about the layout of the Bible, and it was thrilling. I explained how in the Hebrew language every letter has a number, and all the chapters were numerically worked out so that when the early Jewish scribes copied, there was a way to make sure everything was accurate. Also, I explained that when we read different translations, we can still go back to the original language to see how certain words were translated at the time they were copied; words don’t always translate accurately from one language to another, but we can find out the original meanings.

Second Peter 1:21 tells us how God’s messages in the books of the Bible got there in the first place: “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” The Bible is not the writers’ opinions but a direct download from the Creator Himself.

In ancient times, people were outdoors a lot more than we are today, and they saw God’s story of life and the revelation of His son, Jesus Christ, in the configuration and names of the stars and constellations. Jesus Christ is the chief message of the entire Bible. Every book represents one or more aspects of his personality, interests, actions, knowledge, and wisdom.

Jesus is the ultimate gift from God to all humanity and life, from the book of Genesis to the book of Revelation.

We need to read the Bible ourselves or listen to someone else reading it in its entirety. And not just the New Testament. God says it’s important to know what happened before He sent Jesus to earth. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime [before Jesus was born] were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4).

I’ve read through the whole Bible before, and every time learned more truths, but this time I want to read it specifically in light of what I can learn about the son of God, the man Jesus Christ!

The well-known heroes of the Bible—from Abraham to Moses to Joseph to Ruth, Esther, Peter, John, Paul, and David, and other big names—to the lesser-known heroes, including Micah, Nehemiah, Deborah, Elisabeth—to the unnamed heroes, sometimes called “a certain woman,” or a “certain man,” or a child. All these heroes teach about the ultimate savior, Jesus Christ.

Not only do the people of the Bible tell us about Jesus, but we learn things about him as we hear the stories about other aspects of God’s creation such as the ants, the bright and morning star, the living water, the lion of Judah, the shield, the wings, the rain, the balm of Gilead, and so much more. We can look for these things when we read the Bible stories. They are hiding in plain sight if we only use our spiritual eyes and ears to experience what our Creator is telling and showing us about life and about His son Jesus Christ.

In the included photo, you can see my scribbled writing next to the names of the books of the Bible. I heard a preacher listing an aspect of Jesus Christ in each book of the Bible, wrote it down.

Who is Jesus?

In Genesis, He is the seed of a woman.

In Exodus, He is the Passover lamb.

In Leviticus, He is the High Priest.

In Numbers, He is the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day.

In Deuteronomy, He is the prophet like unto Moses.

In Joshua, He is the captain of salvation and the captain of the Lord of Hosts.

In Judges, He is our judge and our lawgiver.

In Ruth, He is the Kinsman Redeemer.

In 1 and 2 Samuel, He is the trusted prophet and the anointed one.

In 1 and 2 Kings, He is the reigning King and the King of kings, and the Lord of hosts.

In 1 and 2 Chronicles, He is the glory and the temple of God.

In Ezra, He is the faithful scribe, and the teacher come from God.

In Nehemiah, He is the rebuilder of the broken-down walls of human life.

In Esther, He is the protector of His people.

In Job, He is the day-spring from on high, the forever living redeemer, the only comfort in times of trouble.

In Psalms, He is the Lord our shepherd.

In Proverbs, He is our wisdom.

In Ecclesiastes, He is the preacher of the kingdom of God.

In the Song of Solomon, He is the lover.

In Isaiah, He is the Prince of Peace.

And the list goes on:

In Daniel, He is the fourth man in the furnace.

In Micah, He is the great intercessor.

In Nahum, He is the avenger of God’s elect.

In Haggai, He is the owner of all the silver and gold in the world.

In Malachi, He is the son of righteousness with healing in his wings.

In the New Testament, he is the wonder worker, the son of man, the son of God, the multiplier, the mediator, the faithful, the friend closer than a brother, the blood of the everlasting covenant, the word of life, the beginning and the end, the living word of God.

The whole Bible is about God’s greatest gift to humanity, His son Jesus Christ. Let’s get to know Jesus better. Join me in this new adventure of reading or listening to the entire Bible. You’ll be glad you did!

PEACE, NOT PANIC

PEACE, NOT PANIC

Last Sunday, I wrote my Christian Living blog about Jesus taking away Satan’s jabs at our peace.

Jesus delivered us from the “chastisement of our peace,” as it says in Isaiah 53:5, but we must believe it and receive it into our daily reality. Here’s a real-life example of how it can work. Jesus quickly intervened in a stressful situation, and I went instantly from panic to peace.

I was struggling with my new computer. It was the day before I needed to write my weekly blog. One of the platforms I use is Facebook, and another is Blogger.com.  I couldn’t get either one to come up on the new computer, and I was starting to freak out. My brain was racing wildly as I tried to get Facebook to accept my new password. It wouldn’t, so I tried an old one, but with no success, so I tried to apply for a new one. I opted for a text with a code, but when they said they had sent it to my phone, it never came! I was getting frantic, and I was running out of time.

I looked at the password I used, and it looked a little strange, so I tried adding what I thought I may have missed. But still, nothing worked, and my blood pressure must have been skyrocketing. I could feel the pinching tenseness all over my body. My shoulders hunched, my forehead furrowed; I was overheated, emotionally overwhelmed, and felt like I was tumbling down a dark hole in utter panic.

Then my best friend Jane calmly and quietly intervened, “Can you do your blog on your old computer?” (Of course I could, but I was in such a panic, I just couldn’t see any answer.) When God inspired Jane to ask a simple question, it was like a switch turned on, and instantly, I froze in time. My shoulders relaxed, and I felt a unique pouring of peace over my whole being. Yes, my old computer wasn’t completely broken, and I could still use it to launch my blog. All the stress fell away, and I experienced perfect peace.

That’s God’s way! With just the flip of His heavenly switch, He inspired Jane to ask a simple question in a quiet voice, and all stress had to leave.

God’s kind of peace washed over me, pure and clear, settling restfully on me and throughout my entire body. All the stabbing pains of stress were like knives being pulled out and thrown far off in the distance. There was not even a trace left behind. My mind and body felt like healing oil had been poured over me, and God’s deliverance was complete. I had peace.

The Lord knows that Satan will try to talk us out of maintaining our God-given peace in this world. Working through a trusted Christian friend is one of the many ways the Lord used to restore that unique supernatural peace.

John 16:33 tells us: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” When tribulation comes, we need to catch ourselves as quickly as possible and remind ourselves that Jesus overcame tribulation and stress with a supernatural peace of knowing and claiming that we overcome panic with peace, because we are overcomers. Like Jesus, we refuse to be victims of panic, stress, or fear brought on by Satan. We are not to be “conformed to [the hurtful attacks of] this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Rom. 12:2).

Even in bad situations, we call in peace, like Jesus did with a boisterous storm on the lake of Galilee. He claimed the peace and it came: “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, “Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:39).

Join me in making a concerted effort to take a deep breath and immediately claim “I have PEACE now!” when I catch myself starting to get nervous, stressed out, fearful, or in a panic. Our heavenly Father, God, gave us peace through the death and resurrection of His only begotten son, Jesus, the Christ, and we have decided to give Him the honor and glory He deserves. We embrace His PEACE now in every stressful situation, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we don’t let go!

Love, Carolyn

TAKING AWAY THE CHASTISEMENT OF OUR PEACE

TAKING AWAY THE CHASTISEMENT OF OUR PEACE

First thing this morning, I got a text from a friend in Chicago, reading: “HE LIVES!” What a wonderful truth. And because we believe he lives and have taken Jesus Christ as our Lord, we are sons and daughters of God. We have received supernatural status and all the benefits of having the spirit of Christ in us. Does Satan want us to experience the benefits? Absolutely not. Satan’s greatest joy is to destroy God’s people, and he has many ways to do it.

Today, in this season of Easter, we are reminded that all the evils the devil tries to carry out on mankind have been supernaturally wiped out by the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah 53 is one place in the Bible where we go to see many of the things Jesus conquered as he became a human sacrifice for our sins and then defeated death itself, all for God and for us.

Today, I want to look at one of the things, “the chastisement of our peace was upon him” (Isa. 53:5b). What does it mean? I looked up the Hebrew word for chastisement to find the answer. In many scriptures using the word chastisement, it’s talking about God correcting His people, and that’s a good thing. However, the Hebrew word is also used in Jeremiah 30:14, which talks about the chastisement of a cruel one, Literally with blows, thrashings, and beatings. This is the kind of chastisement Isaiah 53:5 is referring to.

So, how does that relate to the chastisement of our peace”? God wants us always to be able to grab onto peace of mind, even in bad situations. In Psalm 23:4, David tells us: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.”

Satan is always trying to attack our right to have peace of mind. He says, “No! You can’t have peace; you have to worry, fear, be stressed out, be depressed.  You can’t have peace of mind when things are going so wrong for you and your loved ones.” That is Satan chastising us by pounding us with stressful incidents, scary incidents, hard choices to make, problems that seem impossible to solve, and a multitude of other negative peace breakers.

But Satan is a liar! Jesus took all Satan’s chastisements (beatings) for us and nailed them to the cross. Then he rose again to continue to help us every day to say no to the beatings! In place of the stress, the depression, worry, and fear, Jesus gave us supernatural spiritual peace. It’s different; it’s not natural; sometimes, it doesn’t even seem to make sense at all, but we’ve got it. That’s because we choose to live in a supernatural realm where Jesus is Lord, and God is our spiritual heavenly Father, and the kingdom is not regulated by the devil and his bashings, but a loving Father and His living son, Jesus, the Messiah.

We’ve been delivered from Satan’s chastisement of our peace, and we won’t take it anymore. Jesus gave us a very special supernatural peace. It is his peace! It is a living peace! He said: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7). This is the kind of peace we can claim as believers. It’s a special kind of peace that may seem inappropriate for the situation, but it is vital to our spiritual, physical, and mental health.

We thank you, God, for exhibiting peace in our lives today, in the wonderful name of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Love, Carolyn
