A SMALL VACATION

A SMALL VACATION
Peanut is practicing his smile. When we first rescued him, he had no smile. He was starving and scared. It took 4 ½ years before he started to smile. All we saw in his first smiles were a few of his bottom teeth—so cute. But this year, year five, he’s started to lift his lip on the side to expose his bigger smile. He gets rewarded for smiling, so he’s doing it more and more. Someone told me that smiling and laughing are like a small vacation. Both are good for the soul and a blessing to others too, when they come from a good heart.

It’s been rough at work lately, but I’ve noticed that even when we have rough days, it’s not too long before the smiles come back and the laughing returns. Nothing can really stop us when there’s goodness in our hearts.

But like Peanut, we need to keep practicing. Even when things get tough, we can always find at least one little thing to smile about, no matter how obscure that little thing may be. A smile is a start to a better attitude, but it has to come from within and be genuine. If someone tells us to smile, it rarely works, because even if we do smile, it’s not heartfelt, and more likely to be a smirky smile. We all know that a smirky smile usually hides disgust or anger. It’s not worth much.

I smile at Peanut because I love him, and he smiles back because he knows he’s loved. It’s the same with our relationship with people and with God. And when people disappoint us, and we don’t have any smiles for them, well, we need to find something from God we can smile about. He smiles back at us even though we can’t see Him. But the Bible guarantees that if we turn our hearts toward God, He is quick to make things better for us.

Psalm 34:5 tells us: “If you look to him for help, he will put a smile on your face.”

Only God knows the real truth about any situation, and He tells us what it is. Sometimes just having God’s insight, His point of view, makes me smile no matter how bad or crazy the situations may seem at the time.

Ecclesiastes 8:1 says: “Only the wise know what things really mean. Wisdom makes them smile and makes their frown disappear.”

When God makes us smile, then we have a genuine smile to give.

Let’s be like Peanut and keep finding a reason and opportunity to smile. Once we let it out, the smiles seem to come easier and faster.

Love, Carolyn

GOD'S FAVOR

GOD’S FAVOR
In April of 2014, I was driving to a friend’s house when it started to rain. As I turned into the far lane of the freeway on-ramp, the wheels on my pickup hit the grease in the road and it started to hydroplane just like hitting black ice. I turned into the skid, but then I was sliding in the opposite direction and out of control. The whole truck slipped one way then the other, then toward the cement easement.

I heard the forceful sound of crushing metal as my front end smashed into the cement. I heard the garish crunch, but I didn’t feel it. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion, and I was the spectator watching a movie of myself.

This slowing down of time happened to me before in Michigan when a big truck jackknifed across the freeway right in front of me, and I nearly hit it but suddenly stopped only about five feet short.

I am convinced that God slows down time in these kinds of situations. In Isaiah 38:8 God said, “Behold I will bring the shadow on the sundial ten degrees backward.” That was about forty minutes. God can and will do this for us. And I pray for protection every morning and truly believe that angels surround us so that we don’t get hurt. Psalm 5:12 promises, “with favor thou wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” I believe that with all my heart.

The back end of my truck jutted out into the oncoming lanes. Fortunately, there were only a few cars coming, and they were able to go around.  I managed to scrape my way across the two lanes and into the hotel parking lot.

A tall, good-looking man came over. He asked if I was hurt and I said I wasn’t. He said, “I saw the whole thing, and I can’t believe you weren’t hurt and that you can actually drive your car!” He pulled a tool out of his shirt pocket, “I always carry this with me.” It looked like a pair of pliers, but then he began to cut into the metal bumper with it and was able to bend out the bumper and use the tool again to loosen the last bolt holding it on. He put the piece in the bed of my truck. Then he used the tool again to pull the fender away from the wheel so it wouldn’t scrape. After a little effort on his part and testing on my part, I was able to drive freely. All I had was twenty dollars with me, which I gave him and thanked him profusely for the help.

A couple more miracles took place around this incident: my roommate found a place to get parts at the most discounted prices in America and my neighbor offered to put them on for free. What I’ll end up paying is less than half of what I’d pay with a deductible.

I’m not trying to say that all of this was a delight. Not so. After the accident, I had to grab my mind and mouth many times to keep out the negatives of worry, stress, and despair. But thank God I was able to do it. I’m learning to keep quiet and trust Him even in the negative situations, and He comes through every time.

“If His eyes are on the sparrow, He will surely watch over me” (Luke 12:6-7).

COINCIDENCE OR DIVINE DESIGN?

COINCIDENCE or DIVINE DESIGN?
Summer of 2015: I finished a project for one company, and on the way home I felt an inner urging to go by and see a friend. When I got there, he offered me a job. I didn’t have another job lined up yet, the timing was perfect, and I started immediately.

People who don’t know better might call this a coincidence. Did you know that in the Hebrew language there isn’t even a word for coincidence? The Bible says we’re either walking by the flesh or walking by the Spirit. Nothing happens by chance.

When we even have the slightest inkling to do something, and it doesn’t go against what the Bible says, then we are taking another step of faith along the good path the Lord has for us. Walking by faith gets us to these special times I call divine appointments.

Just like a doctor appointment, or the hairdresser or any other type of appointment in the natural, we don’t want to be late. When the appointments are set up by the Lord, they are going to be successful ones, so we need to respond immediately.

My experience wasn’t earth-shattering, but it did make a big difference in my finances for that week, and that’s important enough to me and to God.

When we pray for help in walking by the Spirit, and we determine to be aware of the Lord’s guidance to us, (one author calls this “God winks”), the results are always positive because the Lord Jesus and his Father God always want the best for us. All Christians can walk by the Spirit.

God gives us a great example in Simeon. He didn’t have a degree or a title, and he was a pretty regular Jewish believer. Luke 2:25 says, “There was a man whose name was Simeon; just and devout.” This verse tells me he was doing his best to be a fair man and he was determined in his heart to follow God.

The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died, he would get to see God’s Messiah. Then on one ordinary day, “he came by the spirit into the temple” (Lk 2:27). There it is! He came “by the spirit”—the Spirit of God gave him the idea to go to the temple, he did it and met his godly appointment.

It was the exact day and time that Joseph and Mary brought the young child Jesus to the temple! Simeon “took him up in his arms, blessed God and said, ‘Lord now lettest thy servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen thy salvation’” (vv. 28-29). The Holy Spirit inspired Simeon, and he went on to give an awesome prophecy over Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus.

We don’t hear any more about this man Simeon, and in fact, this happened near the end of his life here on earth. But I believe God had this record put in the Bible so that we could learn how important and wonderful it is to respond to the urgings of the Spirit.

For me, it increased my finances for the week. For Simeon, it was how he got to meet Jesus face to face.

Galatians 5:25 says, “Let us also walk in the Spirit.” And Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

We can pray, “Lord Jesus, help me to walk by the Spirit today and delight in those divine appointments.”

DOUBT HAS SWIFT FEET, BUT FAITH IS FASTER

DOUBT HAS SWIFT FEET, BUT FAITH IS FASTER
This morning we saw that 4 of the 12 boys trapped in the cave in Thailand are out, and the rescue is in progress. On Friday, Jane’s sister asked us to pray. The Lord gave us specific things; we believed and put our faith on the line by announcing it to get other people involved. How many times have we heard a message from the Lord, and we are too timid or afraid to test it? We hope the results are going to be what we think we heard from God, but we’re not positive, so we wait for the result, rather than daring to speak it out loud before we see it. I'm trying to not do that anymore.

I’m not saying that everything we hear from God we need to blast all over the place. A lot of what the Lord speaks to us may be private. But some things are not. When the Lord tells us something that we’re supposed to speak out, we’ll feel an urging, but doubt has swift feet.

We overtake doubt by speaking out.

So what if it doesn’t work the first time? How are we going to grow in faith unless we step up? There’s no guilt in testing our faith. If we’re wrong a few times, no big deal. We’ll get it right. When we dare to test our faith, we find out who we are.

The Apostle Paul tells us: “The Holy Writings say, ‘I believed, so I spoke.’ We have the same kind of faith as David did. We also believe, so we speak” (2 Cor. 4:13). This verse refers to Psalm 116:10: “I believed, therefore have I spoken.” In verse 18 David goes on to say: “I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.”

Yes, speaking out in front of people takes bravery and the possibility that people will think you’re nuts. But what’s more important: What people think or what God thinks? If we speak out what God thinks, it’s going to help a lot more people than the ones who are going to laugh at us.

And guess what? David wasn’t an automatic faith giant. He had a first time too. He had to speak out something that hadn’t happened yet, just like us.

It’s kind of scary at first, but once you do it a few times, your confidence grows. And God backs you up. If you say something that God gives you to say, He confirms it with “signs following” (Mark 16:20). And if you speak something He didn’t say; it just won’t come to pass. And that’s okay. What baby starts off walking and never topples over? You don’t punish the baby, so why would God punish us for trying? He won’t.

The Bible says we shouldn’t despise small beginnings. We have to start somewhere. Zechariah 4:10 tells us: “The people should not think that small beginnings are unimportant. They will be happy when they see Zerubbabel with tools, building the Temple.” Every building, every project, starts with tools.

One of the greatest tools we have is our mouth. We can use it for building up or tearing down, for good or for evil. Let’s be listening for the things God wants us to say, and be brave enough to speak it out.

BELIEVE THE PROPHETS AND EXPECT THE UNUSUAL

BELIEVE THE PROPHETS AND EXPECT THE UNUSUAL
I listen to several different Apostles, prophets, and teachers, as the Spirit of God leads. This year, Ryan LeStrange is one of the spiritual people I listen to often. He received a prophecy from God about July. He said God showed him there was going to be 30 days of the unusual: unusual miracles, unusual instructions, unusual favor, collaborations, partnerships, revelations, breakthroughs, and other rather odd and different things from the Lord.

“Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper” (2 Chron. 20:20). I decided to believe and act on Ryan’s prophesy and this scripture. I determined to look for the unusual, rare things the Lord would be enacting this month. I began to make a list, and already on the 4th day of July, I have eight things on my list of unusual. I’ve included the link to Ryan’s teaching if you’d like to listen to it. It’s short. You can believe and see the unusual in these 30 days as well.

There are all kinds of “unusual” in the Bible:

A donkey is talking to a person (Num. 22:28-30).
Jesus breaking the rules and healing a man on the Sabbath (Luke 13:13-15)
People being healed by the handkerchiefs that Paul touched (Acts 19:12)
Three enemy tribes killing each other off and God’s people collecting the riches from the dead bodies (2 Chron 20:20)

Some examples of what God has done for me so far: He gave me an unusual prayer partner who covers many of the spiritual things Jane and I pray about, only Sheila covers them in less than half the time it takes us. I received an unusual prayer order from the Lord to pray for an acquaintance who moved away from Vegas. She’s focused on her children's wholesome upbringing, and the care and upbringing of other people’s children as well. She doesn’t even know I’m praying for her. The Lord also gave me an unusual way to fix a drippy spigot on my patio (God is concerned about every detail of our lives). I also realized I have an unusual place I use for writing and studying – a quiet bar in a casino – I don’t gamble, and nothing there distracts me, so I can write and pray and think and study the Bible without being disturbed. The bartender knows and watches over me, so I’m always at peace when I go there. Certain people criticized the Apostle Paul for doing some things that were not so religious, but he told people just to quit judging (1 Cor. 4).

Today is a day when America celebrates freedom. Let’s get a little free ourselves, by letting go of some of those stodgy, close-minded parasitical beliefs, and instead, step into the unusual things of the living Lord. The unexpected, surprising, unusual, and rare blessings are ours. They are wonderful, liberating and REAL!!

FREE FROM TYRANNY

FREE FROM TYRANNY
In a few days, America celebrates her freedom, Independence Day. Just because the Americans wanted to be free from the British doesn’t mean the British were bad people. They just wanted to keep ahold of what they had. We’ve all done it, kept something past its expiration date—Yuk! At work, we have cans of paint that are several years old. We love the color, but when someone opens the can, everyone grimaces and squeals because it stinks so badly. We need to discern between those things worth keeping, and those things we should let go of. The only way to do that is to immerse ourselves in the everlasting truths from the one true God. The Bible is authored by the one true God, creator of us all.

All people and situations are perishable and subject to change. But the truth of God’s word is not subject to change. Nothing from the mouth of the one true God is ever extinguished. Isaiah 55:11 says: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

One of the great things about reading different sections of the Bible is that those things will come up later in our lives. So many times when I’ve read a section of the Bible, it didn’t seem to be significant, and I’d think, “I’m not getting much out of this.” Then a few weeks or months would go by, and suddenly what I’d read popped up in my mind, and it was just what I needed. It was the final chink in a chain of problem-solving.

Great miracles in life – new understanding, healings, refreshings, are all accessible through the life we get from reading, thinking and doing what we find in God’s Word. Read some today.

Let’s hold onto and reach further into the everlasting Word of God. His Word will help us to discern what things are rotting in our lives and show us what we need to do to get rid of them before they kill us.
